The background history of HUNTER NEWNS Solicitors of Hamilton.

 

In 1928, Mr. Ewan Cameron and Mr. Ronald Lowenstern  formed a partnership under the name of Cameron& Lowenstern to conduct a legal practice in Hamilton.

In 1937, they acquired the legal practice of Messrs. Silvester & Silvester practising in Casterton. In or about 1950 Mr. Oliver Cameron (son of Mr. Ewan Cameron) took over the Casterton practice. After the death of  Mr. Ewan Cameron Mr.Lowenstern carried on the said practice under the said name of Cameron & Lowenstern.

In 1960, Robert Hunter and Patrick O’Donohue entered into partnership with Ronald Lowenstern and carried on the practice under the name of Cameron & Lowenstern. At that time there were two other practices in Hamilton namely Melville ,Orton & Lewis and Hull Newns & Co.

In 1975, the practices of Cameron& Lowenstern and Silvester & Silverster were amalgated and carried on under the said name of Cameron & Lowenstern at both Hamilton and Casterton.

In 1984, the practices of Cameron & Lowenstern and Hull Newns & Co. were amalgated and thereafter traded under the name of Hunter Newns and Cornish at Hamilton,Casterton and Portland. At that time the firm had five partners.

When Peter Cornish resigned from the firm the name was changed to Hunter Newns and continued under that name until Robert Hunter retired and the then continuing partners later sold the practice to Mark Stratmann who changed the firm name in 2012 to Stratmann & Co. and subsequently sold to Adam Taylor who changed the name again to Taylor Stratmann & Co.

Taylor Stratmann & Co ceased business in July 2020 and the law firm closed. 

In August 2020, the new law firm of HUNTER NEWNS & HOLT was opened by Patrick Holt to provide a fresh legal representation option for western Victoria.  The name of Hunter Newns was incorporated into the firm name to pay respect to the original law firm partners and founders who contributed so much to the Western District of Victoria for more than 50 years.
